Treat a football shirt like a statement T-shirt: keep everything else simple, get the fit right and let the shirt do the talking. Straight or relaxed jeans, clean trainers and a plain jacket work with almost any jersey, and a retro shirt in a relaxed fit is the easiest place to start.

Wearing football shirts off the pitch has become a look of its own, sometimes called "blokecore", but you don't need to follow a trend to do it well. Here are seven outfits that work, and the sizing details that make the difference between looking put-together and looking like you've come straight from five-a-side.

Start with the fit

For everyday wear, choose a standard-fit (Fan Version) shirt in your usual size, or one size up for a relaxed look. Player Edition shirts are cut slim for the pitch, 4cm narrower across the chest in our charts, so they look sharp on a slim build but can cling as a casual shirt. For a boxier, oversized fit, go up one or two sizes in a standard fit and check the length in the size chart so it doesn't hang too low.

1. Jersey, jeans and trainers

The default, and it works for a reason. A retro or current home shirt with straight or relaxed jeans in mid or dark blue, and clean trainers in white or a colour picked from the shirt. Leave the shirt untucked. A collared retro shirt looks slightly smarter than a crew neck here.

2. Retro shirt and a track jacket

Pair a retro shirt with a zip track jacket or windbreaker in a neutral or matching colour, worn open. It's the classic terrace look, and practical on a cool matchday. Keep the trousers plain so the jacket and shirt don't compete.

3. A long-sleeve jersey on its own

A long-sleeve jersey does the job of a sweatshirt with more character. Wear it with dark jeans or chinos in autumn, sleeves pushed up if you like. Long-sleeve retro shirts often have the most distinctive collars and cuffs, so they suit a simple outfit.

4. Jersey over a hoodie

For cold days, wear the jersey over a plain hoodie with the hood out. It only works if the shirt has room, so size up one in a standard fit. Grey, black and navy hoodies go with almost any kit colour.

5. Summer: jersey and shorts

With plain shorts in a neutral colour, a jersey makes an easy warm-weather outfit. Skip the matching football shorts unless you're heading out to play: plain chino or cargo shorts look more deliberate. Sandals or low trainers finish it off.

6. Matchday layers

Shirt, a light jacket over it, and a scarf if the weather calls for one. If you're going to the game or a watch party, this is the outfit to plan around the club colours: one colour from the kit in the jacket or scarf, everything else neutral.

7. Smart-casual with a collared retro shirt

A retro shirt with a proper collar can sit under an overshirt or an unstructured jacket, with dark trousers and leather trainers. Choose a subtle design over a loud third kit and it reads as a smart polo.

What to avoid

  • A full kit off the pitch: shirt, matching shorts and socks is kit, not an outfit.
  • A tight Player Edition over a bulky layer.
  • Too many logos: keep the jacket, cap and shoes plain.
  • Cracked or faded prints. Our washing guide keeps them sharp.

Frequently asked questions

How should a soccer jersey fit for a casual outfit?

A standard fit in your usual size, or one size up for a relaxed look. Save the slim Player Edition for when you want the match-style shape.

Can you wear a soccer jersey with jeans?

Yes. Straight or relaxed jeans and clean trainers are the easiest combination there is.

Should you tuck a soccer jersey in?

Usually not for a casual look. A half-tuck can work with a shorter, boxier shirt and high-waisted trousers.

Can I wear a soccer jersey to work?

Only where the dress code is relaxed. A subtle collared retro shirt under a jacket is the safest choice.
