Long-Sleeve Football Jerseys: When They Make Sense and How to Wear Them

The long-sleeve football shirt has a slightly old-fashioned reputation, which is odd when you think about how many of the kits people remember were worn with long sleeves. It's also the most practical shirt you can own if you watch football anywhere that gets cold after October.

Here's when a long-sleeve jersey is the better buy, how the fit works, and how to wear one without looking like you've dressed for a different decade.

Why choose long sleeves?

• Cold matches. A long-sleeve shirt under a jacket keeps your arms warm without hiding the badge.
• Framing. A long-sleeve shirt fills a frame more naturally, and sleeves arranged across the front look deliberate rather than empty.
• Retro accuracy. Many classic kits were worn with long sleeves, so a long-sleeve retro shirt is closer to how the kit looked at the time.
• Something different. In a stand full of short-sleeve home shirts, a long-sleeve version stands out.

How long-sleeve jerseys fit

Long-sleeve shirts follow the same two cuts as short-sleeve ones. A Player Edition long-sleeve is slim and match-style, and it runs slim: if you're between sizes, go one size up. A Fan Version long-sleeve has a regular, relaxed fit.

With long sleeves, fit matters a little more than usual. A shirt that's tight across the chest will also be tight across the shoulders and down the arms, and there's nowhere for that to hide. Measure a shirt you like flat across the chest, compare it with the chart on the product page, and size up if in doubt. Measurements can vary by 1–2cm between batches.

How to wear one

On matchday: over a thin base layer and under an open windbreaker or track jacket. It keeps the badge visible and your arms warm. Our outerwear collection has windbreakers in club and national-team colours.

Day to day: a long-sleeve jersey works like a sports top, with jeans or joggers. Plainer designs, like many home shirts, are easier to wear this way than busy away or special-edition patterns.

For five-a-side: fine on a cold night, but a Fan Version will give you more freedom than a Player Edition.

Long-sleeve retro shirts

Framing a long-sleeve shirt

If the shirt is going on a wall:

• size up, as our fit guidance suggests XL or 2XL for display, so the shirt fills the frame;
• think about the back: a name and number, where the product page offers printing, turns it into a keepsake (up to 12 characters and two digits, currently free);
• fold the sleeves across the front or pin them out to the sides, whichever suits the frame;
• keep it out of direct sunlight so the colours hold.

Care

• Machine wash cold (30°C) on a gentle cycle, inside out, or by hand.
• No bleach and no fabric softener.
• Hang to dry by the shoulders so the sleeves don't stretch; don't tumble dry.
• Don't iron directly over badges, names or numbers.
