Player Edition vs Fan Version: Which Football Jersey Should You Buy?

It's the question we get more than any other, usually phrased as "which one is better?" Neither is. They're built for different jobs, and the right one depends far more on what you'll do in the shirt than on how much you want to spend.

Here's the plain comparison, using the measurements from our own size charts rather than marketing language.

The short answer

• Choose the Fan Version if you'll wear the shirt often: matchdays, the pub, five-a-side, travel. It has a regular, relaxed fit made to be worn.
• Choose the Player Edition if you want the slim, match-style look, or you're buying a shirt to frame. Our Player Edition product pages note these shirts are primarily designed for display or framing rather than everyday wear.
• Not sure? Go Fan Version in your usual size. It's the more forgiving of the two.

Side by side: the measurements

These numbers come from the size charts on our jersey pages. Chest is measured flat, armpit to armpit; double it for the full circumference.

The pattern is consistent. In every size, the Fan Version is 4cm wider across the chest (8cm around the body) and 2cm longer. Put another way, a Fan Version is roughly two sizes roomier through the chest than a Player Edition with the same letter on the label.

How each one feels to wear

The Player Edition sits close to the body. On a slim frame it looks sharp, the way shirts look on the pitch. On anyone else, it can feel restrictive, and it shows every crease of whatever you're wearing underneath. It's also a poor choice for layering: there's no room for a base layer on a cold night.

The Fan Version is cut like a regular sports top. There's room to move, room for a base layer, and a little more length so it stays tucked in (or stays down, if you don't tuck). It won't look as tailored, but it's the shirt you can wear for three hours in the stands without thinking about it.

What about price?

On FashionOwn, Player Edition shirts tend to be priced a little higher than our standard jerseys. The difference buys you the cut, not a better shirt for everyday use. If the Fan Version suits how you'll use it, there's no reason to pay more.

How to tell which version you're looking at

• If the product title ends in "Player Edition", it's the slim, match-style cut.
• Shirts labelled "Fan Version" are collected in our Fan Version collection.
• Jersey pages show both size charts, Player Edition and Fan Version, so you can compare before you order.

Sizing tips for each

Player Edition: it runs slim. If you're between sizes, size up, and for framing consider XL or 2XL. Measure a shirt you like flat across the chest and compare it with the chart.

Fan Version: start with your usual T-shirt size, then check the chest measurement against a shirt you own. If you like a looser fit or plan to layer underneath, the next size up won't look out of place.

For either version, remember that measurements can vary by 1–2cm between batches.

Both versions can be printed with a name and number where the product page offers it: up to 12 characters and two digits, with a preview before it goes in your cart. Printing is currently free. Personalised shirts are made specifically for you, so they can't be returned, which makes getting the version and size right beforehand even more important.
