Soccer Jersey Numbers: What Each Number Traditionally Means
Shirt numbers began as a way to show where each player lined up. In the old 2-3-5 formation the goalkeeper wore 1, the two full-backs 2 and 3, the three half-backs 4 to 6, and the five forwards 7 to 11, from the right wing (7) through the centre-forward (9) to the left wing (11). Formations have changed completely since, but many of those meanings stuck: 1 is still the goalkeeper, 9 is still the striker and 10 is still the creative star.
Today most top leagues use fixed squad numbers, so a player can wear almost any number. The Premier League introduced squad numbers in the 1993/94 season, and shirts in the 20s, 30s and beyond are now common. Here's what the traditional numbers mean, and how to choose one for your own shirt.
The numbers one to eleven
| Number | Traditional position | What it usually means today |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Goalkeeper | The first-choice goalkeeper at most clubs |
| 2 | Right-back | A full-back, usually on the right |
| 3 | Left-back | A full-back, usually on the left |
| 4 | Right half-back | A centre-back or defensive midfielder, depending on the country |
| 5 | Centre half-back | Often a centre-back; in Argentina, traditionally the defensive midfielder |
| 6 | Left half-back | A centre-back or holding midfielder |
| 7 | Outside right (right wing) | A winger or wide forward |
| 8 | Inside right | A central midfielder who covers ground |
| 9 | Centre-forward | The main striker |
| 10 | Inside left | The playmaker or creative forward |
| 11 | Outside left (left wing) | A winger, often on the left |
These are traditions, not rules. They differ from country to country, and at any club the manager, not the number, decides where a player lines up.
Why the 10 is special
The No. 10 became the shirt of the team's most creative player, largely because of who wore it. Pelé wore 10 for Brazil, Diego Maradona for Argentina, and Lionel Messi for both Barcelona and Argentina. At many clubs the 10 is still handed to the player the team is built around, which is why it's one of the most requested numbers on a replica shirt.
The 7 and the 9
The 7 was the right winger's number, and some clubs have turned it into a tradition of its own. At Manchester United it's associated with George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo. The 9 has always belonged to the centre-forward, the player whose job is to score.
Goalkeepers and the number 1
The 1 is the most consistent number in football: at most clubs it goes to the first-choice goalkeeper, because the keeper was listed first in the traditional line-up. Back-up goalkeepers wear a range of higher numbers, depending on the club.
Squad numbers today
With fixed squad numbers, players keep one number for the season and often choose higher ones for personal reasons: a birthday, a family connection or a number from earlier in their career. Competition rules set the limits, so what's allowed varies from league to league.
Choosing a number for your shirt
- Your favourite player's number, with or without their name.
- The number for your position, if you play: 1 for a keeper, 9 for a striker.
- A number that means something to you: a birthday, the year you started supporting the club, or the number you wore as a kid.
