Special Edition Football Jerseys: What They Are and How to Choose One
Special edition shirts are the ones people stop you to ask about. They sit outside the normal home, away and third rotation, and they range from anniversary designs to concept shirts and one-off collaborations. That variety is the appeal, and it's also why it pays to read the product page before you buy.
What counts as a special edition?
On FashionOwn, the special edition collection covers shirts that aren't a club's or country's regular seasonal kit. Broadly, they fall into a few groups:
-
Anniversary and heritage designs that look back to a particular year or kit, such as the Boca Juniors 2026 25th Anniversary 2001 (Fourth Kit) Special Jersey.
-
Concept shirts, designs imagined rather than worn in competition. The Chelsea 2026 Royal Heritage Concept Special Jersey – Player Edition says so in its name.
-
Alternative colourways of a team's look, like the Brazil 2026 Imperial Blue Special Jersey – Player Edition or the England 2026 Special Edition Red Jersey – Player Edition.
-
Bold one-offs built around a pattern or theme, such as the Croatia 2026 Glitchy Special Jersey – Player Edition.
Concept shirt or match kit? Why it matters
If you're buying a shirt because you saw a team wear it in a match, check that it's a kit they actually wore. Some special editions are concept designs, created around a club's colours or history rather than worn on the pitch. There's nothing wrong with a concept shirt; some of them are the best-looking designs we stock. But it's a different thing from a match kit, and you should know which one you're buying.
Read the product description for the story behind the design, look for the word "concept" in the title, and if it still isn't clear, email us at support@fashionown.com before ordering.

How special editions fit
Most shirts in the special edition collection come in the slim, match-style Player Edition cut. That means:
- they run slim, so if you're between sizes, go one size up;
- for framing, our fit guidance suggests XL or 2XL;
- our Player Edition product pages note these shirts are primarily designed for display or framing rather than everyday wear.
Check the size chart on each product page and compare it with a shirt you already own, measured flat across the chest. There's more on the cut in our Player Edition guide.
Choosing one worth keeping
Special editions come and go, so a little thought up front helps:
- Buy the design, not the hype. Ask whether you'd still wear or display it in two years, when the next special edition has come out.
- Think about where it goes. Busy patterns look great in a frame and can be harder to wear day to day. A plainer alternative colourway is easier to style.
- Decide on printing. A name and number, where the product page offers it (up to 12 characters and two digits, currently free), makes a special edition feel even more one-off. Personalised shirts can't be returned, though, so be sure.
- Pair it, or don't. A few special editions have matching shorts in the collection. Most are best worn on their own.

Care
Special editions often have large printed patterns and heat-applied details, so treat them gently: wash cold (30°C) on a gentle cycle, inside out, with similar colours; no bleach or fabric softener; hang to dry; and don't iron over badges, names or numbers.
Delivery and returns
Orders are processed within 1–3 business days, most arrive within 7–14 business days, and shipping is free on all US orders. Return conditions are in our Refund Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Is a special edition jersey a limited edition?
Not necessarily. "Special edition" on FashionOwn means the shirt sits outside a team's regular home, away and third kits. We don't make claims about production numbers.
Did teams wear these shirts in matches?
Some special editions are kits a team wore; others are concept designs. Check the product title and description, and ask us if it isn't clear.
Do special edition shirts run small?
Most are Player Edition, which runs slim. If you're between sizes, size up.
