Wear your team's jersey, comfortable jeans or trousers, and shoes you can stand and walk in for a few hours. Then dress for the weather: a stadium can feel colder than the forecast once the sun goes down, so bring a layer you can wear over the shirt. Check the stadium's bag policy before you leave home.

That covers most matchdays. Here's how to adjust it for the weather, the type of game and who you're cheering for.

The basic matchday outfit

  • Top: your team's jersey. Home shirt for a home game is the classic choice.
  • Bottoms: jeans, chinos or joggers. Shorts in warm weather.
  • Shoes: trainers or comfortable boots. Expect stairs, queues and standing.
  • Layer: a hoodie, jacket or windbreaker over the shirt.
  • Extras: a scarf in the team's colours, and a hat in sun or cold.

Cold-weather games

Evening kick-offs in autumn and winter get cold quickly when you're sitting still. Layer from the inside:

  1. A thin long-sleeve base layer.
  2. Your jersey on top, sized to fit over it. A long-sleeve jersey is another option.
  3. A warm jacket or windbreaker you can open at half-time to show the shirt.
  4. Scarf, hat and gloves.

If you plan to wear a layer under your shirt, a Fan Version in your usual size, or one up, leaves room. Our guide to football outerwear covers jackets.

Hot-weather games

  • A short-sleeve jersey on its own. Polyester shirts are light and dry quickly.
  • Shorts and breathable trainers.
  • A cap and sunscreen; many seats get afternoon sun.
  • Check whether the stadium lets you bring a sealed water bottle.

Bags and stadium rules

Many US stadiums have clear-bag or small-bag policies, and some don't allow bags at all. Check the venue's website before you go, so you're not sent back to the car. The same goes for umbrellas, flags and banners, which some stadiums restrict.

Away fans and neutral fans

  • Supporting the away team? Wear your colours in the away section. In the home end, it's safest to keep the shirt under a jacket.
  • Neutral? A national team shirt or a retro shirt from a club that isn't playing is a friendly choice. Avoid wearing a rival of either team.

Youth and college games

Expect bleachers or standing on the touchline, often for longer than you think. A camping chair, a blanket and a waterproof layer make a big difference. A kids kit in the team's colours is a nice way to bring young fans along; our kids size guide helps with sizing.

Styling it beyond the stadium

If you're heading out after the match, a jersey works with jeans and a plain jacket. Our guides to styling a jersey for men and women have outfit ideas.
